Double Entry Journal #2

“Today, more than ever before, attention is being given to the role of the arts, multimodality, and new literacies as they relate to research and practice in the English language arts classroom operate within 21st century literacies.”
I found this quote confusing. I hope that I have deciphered it correctly, for the most part anyway. I see this quote as saying that the role of the arts is playing a bigger role than ever in the new literacies of the 21st century. I hope that this quote is accurate. I, as an art teacher, also hope that if this is the case that some of the arts programs will be updated or reinstated.

“In light of this changing world of text and the diverse student populations we serve, we must not only consider what we think the students ought to know to be literate in the twenty-first century, but we must also ask, what are the everyday literacies that learners bring into the classroom? And how can I value and integrate these literacies into my own practice?”
I think that this quote says it all! We are becoming a more diverse population here in rural WV every day. As teachers, if we can take what the students know or the area in which they are literate in and use them in our own practices in order to help the students to become more literate in the 21st century, then that is what we must do!

“Engagements with the arts offer us aesthetic experiences that are pleasing and transform the very way we encounter our world.”
I absolutely love this quote! As an artist and art teacher, this quote is a very true statement. I really connected with this. I know that because of my own exposure to the arts, I view the world in a different way than others (including others in the field of the arts). I think that the arts allow people to see the beauty and potential in everything around them instead of just what is there.

  1. I too think your second quote is a great one. I also believe that we should use students' already known skills to build on.

  2. I think there is so much potential for the arts to play a larger role in helping students become more literate in the 21st century. One of the defining features of the information age is the important role design plays in the creation and structure of information.

  3. i really like what you said about the third quote. I would have never looked at in that perspective. You made a really good point, if you think about it digitalizing text is a form of art and through this new form of art and creativity we are able to grasp a deeper understanding of the words and the true meaning behind the words. Great Point.
