Double Entry Journal #8

IDEA 1:  Right brain thinkers will rule the future
After watching the videos, I believe that this is the main point that Daniel Pink is trying to make. He talks about how technology is changing the way things are done around the world and that if we want to be competitive and stop the outsourcing of jobs, then we need to be creative. Schools must teach to the right brain and creative side of students or this will never happen. I hope that this means that as an art teacher, my job will become more important and not put on the back burner anymore!!!

IDEA 2: Class rank: stacking people up according to grades
This has to be the most unfair thing about high school!!! I hated this!!! I was the student that took all honors classes while my friends took the least challenging ones they could. Needless to say, they were ranked higher than I was because I would have B’s in my honors classes and they would have A’s in their “easy” classes. However, I was glad to find out that a college was more likely to accept you because you had that little H  typed beside a course and a B in an honors class meant more than an A in another. I am also a firm believer that if students are going to be ranked, then upper level classes should be weighted!!! I was so happy when this happened in my former high school while my niece was attending. This meant that she didn’t have to go through what I did (having her friend rub their “better” grades in her face!)!!!
IDEA 3: Three key elements of good speeches: brevity, levity, repetition

As teachers, I think that we must look at all of our lectures as small speeches. If we keep them short and to the point, humorous, and make sure to repeat or stress the important information we will be doing what is best for our students. Even as a college student it was easy for me to drift off or lose interest if a lecture was long, boring, or the information did not seem important! If we use these simple ideas, then our student shouldn’t lose interest and will learn the needed information!!!

  1. I know what you mean about the high school grade issues. I've seen students come out of high school, ranked as the valedictorian and never been in an honors class. Or they allow a junior to graduate early and be the valedictorian. I think that's wrong too. I think now they use a different scale to try and remedy these issues.

  2. I think Daniel Pinks argument is excellent news for Art educators! I believe several of the readings and speakers in this course are making similar claims! I know it's good news for my right brain thinking dyslexia son!

  3. I love the points you made in Idea 1! You are exactly right as is Daniel Pink, we need to keep creativity and expression in the educational process. And as an art teacher you have great options in that area, so your job should be encouraged. The united states is to focused on the traditional methods of education rather than meeting our students needs and preparing them for the future. Each day more technology and creativity is required to survive in the world, imagine what it will be like in 10 years from now! Great Post!

  4. I am right there with you with point 1! Creative minds have a way of being able to look at situations differently and solve problems...well, creatively. Creative minds do and will have an impact on our world.
Point two was a point that I made as well. I took all honors and college classes in high school while some of my friends were taking the less demanding classes and getting the same GPA as I was...not fair.
